Plan

Three Phuket days with the show

A simple three-day plan around the Patong cabaret: an island day to Phi Phi and Maya Bay, an elephant feeding visit, the sunset cruise and the evening show.

Quick answer

Put the cabaret on your first or last evening, when a short night suits you best. Give one full day to the speedboat trip to Maya Bay, Phi Phi and Bamboo Island, which starts early and runs about eight hours. Use another for a one-hour elephant feeding visit in Kathu, then either a quiet evening or the Coral Island sunset cruise if you want a second day on the water.

Day one: land, settle, cabaret

Arrival days are rarely good for long outings, which makes them ideal for an hour in a Patong theatre. Check in, eat early, then head to the cabaret for a mimed revue of costume after costume, with numbers from Thai classical to Western pop. Choose a session late enough to absorb a delayed flight, and remember to collect your ticket at the theatre before the start. If your arrival slips, cancelling stays free until 24 hours before the show. Afterwards, if you are staying in Patong, the beach is there for a first look at the bay at night.

Day two: Phi Phi and Maya Bay

The Phi Phi Islands lie in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and the Krabi coast. The speedboat day takes about eight hours, with time at Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Le, Pileh Lagoon, snorkelling, a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don and free time on Bamboo Island. Maya Bay, used as a location for the film The Beach, closed in 2018 because of damage from overtourism and reopened to visitors in early 2022. The day starts early, with check-in at the pier before the boats leave, so keep that evening quiet.

Day three: elephants, then the evening

The elephant is Thailand's national animal, and the Thai elephant is a subspecies of the Asian elephant that became endangered in Thailand in 1986. The feeding visit at a sanctuary in Kathu district lasts about an hour: you feed the elephants fruit or grass, watch them up close and hear about their behaviour and care from a guide, with a soft drink afterwards. The visit is short, so most of the day stays open. If you skipped the cabaret on day one, this is a good evening for it.

Or swap in the sunset cruise

If one day on the water is not enough, the Coral Island catamaran makes a shorter second sea day than Phi Phi. It runs about six hours from a late-morning pickup in Patong, Kata or Karon, with snorkelling and beach time on Coral Island and a Thai buffet dinner on board near Promthep Cape as the sun goes down. It fills the evening, so keep the cabaret for another night. Non-swimmers and people prone to seasickness are better off with the elephants and the show.

Getting the order right

Put the weather-dependent days first. Phuket's dry season runs from December through March; in the wet season, which covers the rest of the year, boat trips are more likely to change, so book them early in your stay to leave room to move them. The cabaret and the elephant visit both go ahead in the rain, which makes them good fallbacks. Each of these bookings carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which makes reshuffling easy if the sea turns rough.

Who this plan doesn't suit

The Phi Phi speedboat trip is not suitable for people over 60, anyone pregnant, people with back, heart or breathing problems, wheelchair users or anyone prone to seasickness; if that is you, swap it for a second land day and keep the elephants and the cabaret. Families with very young children should know that the island day does not take under-threes. And if three days already feels busy, drop the cruise: the cabaret and one good day out are plenty for a short stay.
